Case Study

Nivaga III,
Pacific Island Vessel

Background

The Nivaga III is a passenger/cargo ship from Tuvalu. She’s 60.5m and operates mainly between the islands. With an extensive onboard sickbay, one of the Nivaga III’s key functions is to transport medical patients between the islands, sometimes as far as Fiji.

The vessel came to us in need of an extensive survey – its normal 5-yearly survey had to be skipped because of Covid-19. This meant there was an inevitable rise in maintenance and defects, preventing the vessel from doing its important work.

Servicing

All prime movers were completely serviced, given a full major rebuild to the manufacturer’s specifications. Both auxiliary generators and the propeller shafts were removed and serviced, too, and we brought the firefighting, first aid, and life rafts all in line with international regulations.

We also removed and overhauled the cargo crane. One of the core functions of the Nivaga III is its sea crane, which drops off and picks up tenders in the water so it can carry cargo to the outer islands. Through our in-house machine shop, our specialist team used line borers to line bore the cargo crane in situ.

The Titan Marine team also have the expertise to inspect and test the navigational equipment, and we finished the project with a refurbished paint job.

Why Titan Marine

Our large slipway and full-service facilities meant we could repair every facet of the vessel in-house – nothing needed to be sent away. And our high level of quality assurance than the islands meant the vessel could continue to operate internationally.

The client made special mention of the high-quality workmanship and ability to source materials and spares (OEM) easily. Having all the expertise of the Titan Marine team at the ready made the re-certification of the vessel’s assets simple, straightforward, and no-fuss.
