Waipapa Ports of Auckland Tug

Background

At 22 metres long, 338 gross tonnes, a maximum speed of 12 knots and 51 tonnes bollard pull, the Waipapa is one of the true workhorses of the Ports of Auckland. It’s one of three primary tugs that escort cargo ships in and out of the ports, so when one is out of commission, there’s little redundancy.

That meant that when the Waipapa came into our slipway for her 5-yearly survey, we faced an immense time pressure. We needed to maintain our usual high standards but also get her back to work as soon as possible.

Servicing

We began with heavy preparation, getting all the parts and machines ready before the Waipapa even arrived. Our apprentices and engineers understood the urgency and were ready to work the long hours needed to get the job done.

As well as the usual 5-yearly survey inspections and repairs, we replaced the tires on the fender to solve their corrosion problems.

We also performed in house non-destructive testing to ascertain Kort nozzle repairs, and did a chemical composition study of the Kort nozzle itself.

Lastly, we gave the vessel a full paint refurbishment.

Why Titan Marine

As a result of the work we did for the Waipapa, we’ve been working with Ports of Auckland vessels more and more frequently. Our team understands the pressures and can rise to the occasion.

Our work on Kort nozzles means we’re now able to help and advise other shipyards.
