‘Otu Angaʻofa, Pacific Island Vessel
Background
The ʻOtu Angaʻofa is a ro-ro passenger ship which has been running in Tonga since 2010.
She came to us after the Hunga-Tonga volcano of 2018. The tsunami from the volcano pushed the ship violently against the wharf, resulting in a damaged hull, crane, and rudder. To make matters worse, Covid hit before the vessel was able to make it down to us. By the time the ʻOtu Angaʻofa reached us for her five-yearly service, she’d had a hard life and was in bad need of repairs.
Servicing
Using specialist material, we fabricated and machined a new rudder stock using our in-house line borer and large lathe under class-approved guidelines.
We gave the vessel a a full underwater antifoul and topsides paint refurbishment, machinery upgrade, and habitability upgrade. The stern ramp – essential for the vessel’s primary function – was completely removed for maintenance.
Line-borer and large lathe machines.
We also commissioned, fabricated, and installed an in-house seawater hydrophore for the sanitary systems, all to class-approved guidelines.
We have a contingent of Pacific Island apprentices and engineers here at Titan Marine and they were proud to be giving back to the islands.
Why Titan Marine
Our large slipway and full-service facilities meant we could repair every facet of the vessel in-house – nothing needed to be sent away. And our high level of quality assurance than the islands meant the vessel could continue to operate internationally.
We also pride ourselves on working alongside any crew that may come our way. The ʻOtu Angaʻofa staff and crew worked alongside us for the duration of the project, and they even joined us in our annual confined space and first aid training.
